Supporting Students in their Learning

This week we are looking at how people learn and as educators what we can do to support lifelong learning. We look at Chapter 5 of How People Learn II, as well as an article by Mark Gura, and finally the relevance of these two texts against our ISTE Standards.

    Emily,
    I really like your infographic. It is clear and connects How People Learn II with Gura's ideas and the ISTE Standard. The layout is very easy to follow, and I like how clean it looks. I also really like that you pointed out the active vs. passive learning. Great job!

    Hi Emily! Thanks for sharing information from Chapter 5. I like how you explained that learning needs to form connections with prior knowledge. If students don't see how things are linked, they may not understand why content in relevant to them. This ties in with Chapter 6 on Motivation, so it's very interesting to see that same idea solidified in your infographic. Nice work!

    Yes! Gura's philosophy on creativity inspired me. All too often creativity is thought of as a tactical, crafty process like you mentioned. However, creativity can make everyday challenges like problem solving easier. Knowing this as an educator, inspires me to ensure my students have opportunities to truly create in all the ways!

Authentic Intellectual Work

 Authentic Intellectual work is essentially engaging students in their own learning. That is, instead of telling them about a subject or experience, we let them experience it for themselves. We know that human beings of all ages learn best when we get to interact with what we are learning. Once we get to experience something, it has a much deeper meaning to us than if someone simply tells us about it. Traditionally in classrooms, students are receiving information, maybe providing commentary or feedback, but not experiencing it on their own.
